"SCHICHT III" is a candlestick produced in cooperation with "Fraunhofer-Institut für Fertigungstechnik und Angewandte Materialforschung" (IFAM) in Bremen. It is made by "lost foam casting", a casting were a positive mold of polystyrene is vaporized by molten metal.
The task of the lost foam class by Prof. Andreas Kramer was to think of a design representing the possibilities of the special casting process.
I wanted to play around with the shadows of the candle and with Lost Foam casting I was able to build a structure of undercuts on the surface. The hard shadows give it a kind of monumental look.
All in all the project was an experiment and the first time for me making a "real" object.
